Considering a Freedom 35

Posted by willym3x (wmichne@…>)

I am considering purchasing a Freedom 35 sloop, and would be
interested in hearing from other owners, present and past, about
what they liked and disliked about the boat. Feel free to email
your comments so you can be perfectly honest. Thanks.

Even though I own a 38 and not 35, I will chime in here since I chartered a 35 for a week in BVI. It sold me on Freedom concept. Winds were ideal–12-18–and we raced around BVI on all points of sail. On one close reach it took quite a while for a Beneteau 40-something to overtake us.
Four guys plus my 15 year old son were comfortable. Nice aft cabin. Nice head with separate shower stall. Chart table is not too big, and there is no “dedicated” seat other than end of settee. 38 feels a little stiffer, 35 feels a little livlier.

I purchased my 35 last year and my wife and I sailed it from Newport to the
Chesapeake last May. We’ve had a great time with the boat this last year on
the Chesapeake. I’ve sailed many boats over the last 25 years and I’m most
impressed with the quality of the construction and the practical design.

Originally I thought, from looking at pictures, that the boat would be too
small. Its usually just me and my wife, but we also have a 125lb Lab who is
with us all the time. The boat proved to be very comfortable.

Having never sailed the Freedom design, I was aprehensive, but I can
honestly say I would be hard pressed to go back to a traditional rig. The
boat is fast, forgiving, and easy to sail short-handed. If you take a test
sail, make sure you have them show you a man overboard drill. I didn’t
believe it until I saw it. You lock the wheel down and the boat just
continues to sail in a circle. No sheets to tend!!

Please feel free to email me directly with any particular questions

Jay

If I had had the funds last spring, I would have bought a Freedom 35
I looked at in Newport as my liveaboard.
