Considering Freedom 21

Posted by Sean Mulligan (quadmulligan@…>)

Greetings!

My name is Sean and my mate is Vivian.
We’re in Stamford, CT on Long Island Sound.

Last summer we dismasted our '84 ODay222.
Now we are considering an '84 F21.
We will visit this listing this weekend:

http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_detail.jsp?currency=USD&units=Feet&checked_boats=935523&slim=quick&

We would appreciate any tips, insights, things to look out for, etc.
If all goes well and we buy her, I’ll keep you posted on her commissioning, pix, etc.

We sail with www.singlesundersail.com

Thanks!

I live not more than 10 miles from this yacht
yard/broker.

Be careful here.

This dealer has had one particular F21 on
sale for at least 5 years. The one I looked at about 5 years ago has a name on
the side something like “Bone Doc” or some such thing. When I looked
through their yard last summer it was still there. I wouldn’t have bought
that one 5 years ago and I sure wouldn’t buy it now at any price.

You might do better to buy one from a
current owner. The F21 is a great boat – I owned #179 - a fin keel - for
three years.

If you do decide that this one interests you,
DO have it surveyed and pay particular attention to the mast, deck integrity
where the traveler is mounted, the keel to hull attachment – inside and
out, and the sails (new ones are not cheap and you won’t find worthwhile
used sails on the used market).

Don’t worry about what appear to be
a series of horizontal cracks in the mast - that’s pretty typical. It’s
the epoxy paint that was applied at the factory.

But, the fittings– particularly where
the boom gooseneck is attached to the mast – tend need some attention.

Best regards and good luck,

Joe Conron

Joe - thanks so much for the heads up! We will be circumspect and not but a clunker that’s been on the hard for 5 years! In any case we would use a reputable surveyor. How would you suggest finding a current owner willing to sell a Freedom in good condition? Thanks Joe! We did some more checking based on your timely message and were able
to
“extract information” that the boat was not in good shape.
So we drove to Rhode Island this afternoon and saw 2 other 21s - also not in
very good
shape…a pity, since we really like the boat! Yes, I noticed the horizontal
lines in the CF.
Neither boat we saw had the gunsight rig, one had the spinnaker in a bag and the
other
appeared to be set up as a mainsail only rig.

There is one listed down in the Annapolis area we are thinking of visiting.
It looks to be in much better shape (and recently sailed) than the others we
saw.
Does any body know of it? Here’s the link:

Click on photos for largest size and if you can, please give me your feedback on
what you
condition you would consider this boat to be found in.

Thanks, Sean and Vivian

Hey–I took a look at the boat on the site you referenced and if the
claims of condition are true, it looks like a good deal. I bought my
21 in annopolis last year for the same price and feel that I got a
fair deal. I love the boat particularly for its level sailing and
ease of singlehanding. I’m working on converting the forward section
into an organized storage area because the berths are tiny for
average sized adults and really only suitable for children. I plan
on some extended sailing in the Chesapeake and want to distribute the
weight of stores evenly and avoid clutter in the main salon. Good
luck on finding a 21 that fits your needs. Chris
