Cunningham setup and usage

Sean (and others), The Freedom 21 has provisions for a cunningham. A cunningham provides the ability to tighten the luff of the mainsail and change the draft position. In particular, on a sailboat with a fixed gooseneck (like the Freedom 21). Links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cunningham_(sailing) http://www.uhh.hawaii.edu/~sailing/UHHSailingSite%20folder/UHHSailingSite/Cunningham.html This would be the first thing to tighten when you want to flatten the mainsail. Followed by the outhaul. Note the lower cringle (hole/grommet) in the main in this picture: http://www.seanmulligan.com/Stories/Emmylou_Labor_Day_06/target0.html One (either one) of the reefing lines is used as a cunningham. Steps: 1. Put the reefing hook in the cunningham cringle. 2. Put a slip-type stopper knot in this line at the end of the boom 3. Tighten the reef line. You’ll see that the stopper knot prevents the reefing line from pulling down the clew of the main. However, you’ll see that it tightens the luff of the main. I am using the exact same process on my J/32 (as it does not have a dedicated cunningham line). When I sailed the Freedom 21, I would use the 2nd reefing line for the cunningham control which still kept the 1st reefing line free. Only when I needed to take 2nd reef would I have to undo the
stopper knot at the end of the boom. -John

Yes, I do this much of the time and it works quite well. I’ve never had the boat out with 2 reefs…maybe this Fall…
