My boat (1987 F30) came with Datamarine instruments, and they have
served me well all these years. The wind instrument now shows signs of
packing it in. I have assumed that Datamarine had gone out of business
since I never see them refered to, advertised, or see their instruments
reviewed in any of the publications.
However, this morning just for the heck of it I googled the word and
discovered that they are apparently alive and still produce a modern
version of the DataLink instrument I have.
Does anyone know anything about this, and more importantly know
anything about the quality of their current products?

My F36 (1986) also has Datamarine instruments. I can’t tell you anything about their new products but the were able to sell me a replacement sender for my knotmeter. It continues to work two years later.

I’ve used www.dmimarine.com for replacement parts
for my old datamarine instruments. They also do repair/reconditioning including
of masthead units. They were very helpful and can pretty much keep the old
instruments alive one way or another.

Not directly on the subject,but- does anyone know who sevices Standard Horizon instruments. Not the radios. My Knotmeter and depth sounders are hors de combat. Standard-Horizon wants nothing to do with them. Also-how do I get the units out of the bulkhead-I see no screws, fastenings, clips or anything. Am I missing something???

I had a set of datamarine instruments for ten years on my C&C before I bought my Freedom 35. They are excellent and alive and well in Pocasett, MA.
Good luck. Mac

Speaking of datamarine instruments and instruments in
general, I have an illumination problem. I enjoy night
sailing and I find in incredible how much illumination
those little tiny lights in the instruments and in my
compass are able to generate. Does anyone know of a
quick and easy way to implement something to dim the
lights. Of course I have considered a 12VDC dimmer, I
wonder if anyone has a simpler solution. I currently
throw a towel over the damn things and peek under from
time to time, but this technique is not particularly
satisfactory because most of my sailing is on the
California Delta where seeing your depth is like
breathing.

Sounds like the problem you are trying to solve is interference with
your night vision. As I see it there are three possible good ways to
go.
-
Replace your illumination bulbs with red ones.
-
Buy the red paint on coating for your existing bulbs.
-
Go to your local auto parts store and pick up some of the red
plastic sheeting used to cover damaged tail light assemblies.
The red light will not interfere with your night vision! This can be
a bigger problem then most folks think. It can take a good 40
minutes to regain your full night vision after exposure to white
light. That is why most aircraft have red illumination in the
cockpit! Good luck.

Skip,
excellent idea and easy too. I’ll steal a bottle of my
daughter’s nail polish. Ha Ha, the crazy things that
seem to collect in a boat.
