Richard, you describe interior of early centerboard models. They also
feature light colored (yellowish) wood inside (I still can not
identify the wood, may be birch). They also have wooden toerail on
outside (instead of aluminum). There were very few boats built in US,
I have heard number 10. There are two variation - “open interior” and
enclosed V-berth. “Open interior” has partial fore bullhead and there
is no door. Other than that, both layouts are similar.
I have seen two more layouts for fixed keel models. Fixed keel boats
have a lot more room inside (It seems like they have, because trunk is
gone) and there are variations with galley/pilot berth locations. They
have head next to V-birth.
About the rig.
Original owner of the boat didn’t like wrap-around sails. At some
point he had entire rigs replaced at a factory. Masts, booms,
everything. So, I’m lucky - I have “conventional” rigs with newer
masts. It shows - there is no single surface crack, typical for first
generation of masts.
However I was looking for the right boat for about 5 years and I
thought a lot about what I’d do with wrap-around sails.
I’d keep wishbooms. I’d put track and use single ply sail, similar
set-up to Nonsuch boats.
My track is riveted, so, I guess, riveting is a right way to do it.
If you get fancy, and purchase carbonfiber track, then, I guess, it
can be glued/epoxied to a mast.
Good luck anyway and welcome to the board.
Vlad

Thanks all for the replies - this certainly looks to be the answer to
the riddle. It seems however that Freedom made certain changes to the
layout below. The one that I’m interested in has the galley
immediately under the companionway to port, the heads opposite on
starboard, a saloon with table on the centreboard box and berths
/seats either side with a double V-berth in the forepeak. There seems
to be considerable variation in layouts having looked at other 28’s on
Yachtworld!
Vlad - does your boat have the 2 ply wrap around sails on wishbones?
If so, I’d be very interested in your experiences with this rig and
also any advice you can give me on getting new sails built and am
considering the option of having mast tracks installed so that I can
move away from the 2 ply sails (which are rotten!)
Thanks again,
Richard
