I received a call from my yard manager last week to tell me that my scheduled
work was
well on its way to completion, but also to tell me that when they went below,
they
discovered about 30 gallons of fuel in the bilge of my F38. Tank had been
filled,
winterized and boat stored on the hard in Massachusetts. They pumped out the
fuel and
inspected all lines thinking they would find a leak, but have not. I had noticed
some
wetness around the fuel line near the fuel pump (if not the pump itself) during
last season
and intended to replace line and pump this spring. This area was dry when the
boat was
put to bed last fall, and is well above the fuel tank anyway. It would not think
that a siphon
effect could occur from this location.
Aside from a pinhole leak in the tank itself, does anyone have thoughts? We’ll
be removing
the plywood covering the tank and inspecting, including pressure testing, but I
was
wondering if anyone had ever had a similar problem.
Thanks.
