I just talked with my neighbor who sets tanks for heating oil. He
says the heating oil is the same fuel as number 2 diesel fuel and it
is also dyed like the off road diesel. The one difference is that
it’s the old high sulfur formula so in a way, this diesel is actually
better for my old Perkins.

I was told that the marine diesel has more
additives then truck diesel to prevent algae growth since it around water more….any
truth to that?

Some brands of marine diesel do have the borate
algae killers already added. Ask your marina what
they have. The big problem with #2 heating oil
vs. diesel is that the Cetane rating (like octane
for gasoline) is unknown, and the fuel oil dealer
doesn’t know either. Most owner’s manuals for
marine diesels specify a Cetane number in the fuel requirements. Herm
