dining table accidentaly releasing?

Posted by willie doyle (williedoylemom@…>)
A friend told me of being in the salon area of a boat with a fold up table (similar to a Freedoms) and having the table come crashing down in high seas. The storage box was still bolted to the wall but the fastner that held the table up let go. Has anyone had this happen on their Freedom? Anyone installed some extra hardware to make sure it did not? If so, what? Thanks, Faith

I’ve never had it happen, thankfully, but when I bought my boat the surveyor did note that the hook and eye holding up the table was not the best fitting for the job. The hook and eye are attached by fairly short screws, unlike the storage box assembly, which is through-bolted through the bulkhead.

A friend with a Freedom 35 “Sodah” had this happen to him. Damage was sustained to the fiddle and a nick in the cabin sole. I repaire the damage to his broken fiddle and replace the short under sized screws holding the hinge in place with one’s considferably longer. I have a 1986 F36 which came from the factory with longer screws. The failure on the 35’s table was a result of the hinge screws pulling out from the weight of the table and not the hook and eye. On my own boat I’ve made sure that long screw were used with the hook and eye and I use a heavy rubber band wrapped around the hook and eye to be sure the hook does not pop out of the eye during pounding seas. If you’ve got the brass hinge I would check the screws to be sure they are long.ones - about 3/4inch long should work fine.

I’m headed to my boat tomorrow and I will check the size of the hinge screws. Thanks for alerting me to this; it never dawned on me that that might be the weak point.
