Dutchman System

Posted by tgcmd (Finesse@…>)

If anybody has first-hand experience with the Dutchman system, especially on cat
ketches,
I would appreciate information/thoughts about the pros and cons. My rigger and
sailmaker are both recommending it. I have conventional booms and full-battened
sails.

I considered this but went with the mackpack. I’m installing it this week so I can’t provide real feedback but it seemed simpler and has some advantages including cost, no sail modifications and a few others. My sailmaker (not Mack Sails which makes it) recommended it. See http://www.macksails.com/mackpack.htm .

If you already have rigid vangs, then you probably don’t want to add
a topping lift, which (I may be wrong) seems pretty essential to the
dutchman system. The Mackpack, Doyle Stackpack, or lazy jacks seem
to be better, lower cost, less intrusive systems.

I have the Mack Pack on my F36. Have them modify their lazy jack
spacing. Their normal practice is to equally divide the boom length
with the lazy jack down legs. Your sail is very well supported at
the mast and forward end by its attachment to the mast track. The
large roach piles up a lot of sail at the aft end of the boom and
thats where you need the support. Place your aft leg 1 ft. from the
clew.

Errr, I am a Dutchman by birth, so forgive me this question, but what
on earth is a Dutchman System?
