I am trying to figure out how to remove the wheel from the pedestal on my 1982
F-33. All
previous boats I have owned have had tillers. Under the plastic cap nut, there
is a threaded
post/shaft. There is a slot in the wheel hub, where the threaded post comes out
on the aft
side. I have tried using the brake and putting padded vice grips on the post.
The wheel
clearly is not going to simply unscrew from the post.
What am I missing?

On my Freedom 39 with the Edson pedestal and wheel. The wheel slides
off. I first used a small wheel puller that I had, bent the heck
out of the puller. Rented the big “o” wheel puller from the rental
yard and it poped off with a bang. I put a little grease on the post
and now I can remove by hand to get the wheel out of the way for more
room in the cockpit.

The wheel is held on the shaft between the nut and a circlip around the
shaft, and a shaft key keeps the wheel from turning on the shaft. A wheel
puller is probably necessary for removal, and one can be rented for a few
bucks. After removal, clean the shaft, key and key slot of corrosion, lightly
grease the shaft. Careful not to lose the shaft key.Remove yearly to keep
clean. If the circlip is broken, replace it. Edson has spares
