Engine Control

Posted by schult127 (schu127@…>)

I am in the process of restoring a Freedom 25 ('84) and I need to
remove the exterior portion of the throttle/shifter. The exterior has a
round cover with a removable lever and a knob in the center to
disengage the shifter from the throttle. There is no manufacturer name
on it that I can find. I removed the set screw from the bottom and the
knob in the middle assuming the exterior portion would come off to no
avail. The engine is a Yanmar 1GM and the throttle/shifter is the same
as on my previous Freedom 29 ('85).I sprayed everything with WD 40. Any
suggestions?

Give Freedom/Legacy a call. There are still some people employed there that
remember details like that. I’ve called them looking for information about my 25
year old Freedom and they were of great help. You can get the number from their
website. Better to call than e-mail.

Patience is the word. I just went
through the whole painful process. First instead of WD 40 get some liquid
wench and soak it like crazy! Constantly! Remove handle which is
only held in by an indent and a piece of steel. Remove set screw from
bottom of round chrome cover. All this you have done already so here is
the rest. You need to go to a auto parts store and buy a bearing puller
like this:

Make sure its wide enough to go over and
in back of the round chrome dome. Remove the knob (disengages shifter)
completely and put the pointy end on end of the screw shaft in the hole and the
levers under (back of) the chrome dome and tighten slowly. If it does not
move like mine I just tighten as much as I could applied more liquid wrench
tighten more and finally it popped off. The spline is rather long so it
has a lot of surface to rust to.

Good luck
Bob
