I have two 7 yr old Raytheon (now Raymarine) RL70 chartplotter /
radarscreens in my boat.
Strangely, the screen backlights of both units did not work when I got
the boat. All other functions work well. I had the backlights replaced
by the national agent for Raymarine in the Netherlands, Holland
Nautic. They charged me $ 217.- for each backlight set (two backlight
bars and some wire in a set), excluding labour, so $ 435.- for
materials only for the two units. I was quite shocked by this amount.
Am I wrong and is this a normal price for such parts? Nowadays, you
can buy a complete new TomTom or Garmin road navigator for the sum I
paid for the backlights only.
Another question: why have the backlights on units died? Over voltage?
But everything else, including the key lighting, still works.
Thanks,

Michel,
unfortunately I’m not all that surprised. I’ve been trying to find an
RL70c to replace one of my RL70s as well, and I’ve been pretty
disappointed to find that these units - which haven’t even been made
for years - are still selling in the $2500 range on ebay, if you can
find them. It’s mindboggling when you can buy a C120 for half that.
