While browsing the photos I noticed “Freelance” on a low trailer. Is
this a fin keel boat with the fin disconnected or a third type with a
centerboard. I was aware of only two keels, the fin type as in “Little
Bandit” and the shoal draft as in “Maccochaque”.

Yes. Freelance is a bit different. It has twin bilge boards that
retract all the way into the hull. The UK model has similar but it
seems to have the boards set much wider and with bulbs and wings
attached. There is a doc on www.freedom21.info about the different UK
keels.
The setup on freelance is very handy for shallow launching ramps. From
what I can piece together this was a mod done by South Coast yachts in
Sydney, Australia in the mid eighties.
The only downside is that my kids like to lose their toys and candy
down inside of the cases when the boards are down and at one priceless
moment I looked down into the cabin to find my pragmatic five year old
using the opening at the top of one of the cases as a toilet. I can
still hear the “No” echoing across westernport bay and all of the birds
taking flight.
