What is strange about this boat is that someone removed the bulkhead. Although it make it roomy looking down below, I would be concerned about oil canning and deck flex. Also, the mast puts some strain on the deck amplifying the forces of flexion. Anybody with experience as to how much support the bulkhead provides? A number of UK-built F21’s were made without any bulkhead but with
two simple vertical posts linking the deck moulding to the inner
moulding. These posts were situated on each side of the entrance to
the forward compartment and were simple spindle turned wooden posts.

I have recently removed the half-inch ply bulkheads on my F21 for re-
veneering and making up some wooden mouldings for the edge of the
doorway into the forward compartment since UK bouts were made with
bare ply edges in this reagion which looks shoddy to my eyes and I
fould that the GRP “tabs” linking the upper edge of the bulkhead ot
the deck moulding were really minimal and I wonder what structural
effect the bulkhead really has?

As an ex-aerospace stress engineer I feel that the balsa core
sandwich deck would be very unlikely to buckle & distort if the
bulkhead were removed but to be sure I would probably link the deck
to the inner moulding with some form of posts. If anyone wants a
photo of this “bulkheadless” UK F21 layout I’m sure I have one
somewhere that I could post on our site?

I would love to see a picture as that layout would appeal to me and I am making significant modifications to my boat anyway. Thank you and i really appreciate all your contributions. I wouldn’t remove it entirely but a “mushroom” cut-out as in the F32
would be almost as strong - certainly as strong if it was double in
thickness.
