F-21 Rudder

Posted by WILFRED BISHOP (wilf.bishop@…>)

Does anyone have a Freedom 21 rudder available? I can use either the fixed rudder design or the UK lifting rudder since I have a deep water mooring. My current “way out of class” F-21 rudder was severely hacked about & modified by the previous owner and is now beyond recovery. Since the F-21 is no longer in production I face the options of finding a used rudder or making one up from scratch over the winter. If I have to make one from scratch I will need the exact dimensions - anyone know where I could get this information?

Any condition rudder considered as l long as it can be repaired - I have hands-on experience of aerospace composites repairs so I have materials & know-how to do this. The only practical problem is that since I am over here in the UK the cost of shipping a used rudder from USA to England would be high I guess? Perhaps I can locate a rudder in the UK - who knows?

Anyway - all help/advice is much appreciated.

Wilf,

Sorry this is a really quick note. Due to
circumstances, I am moving very quickly, moving includes changing continents,
and therefore my boat has now been sold and I am now in the process of packing
up my apartment and computer.

The last job I did was to replace the
rudder mounts, I added a 6” inspection hatch to the inside skin of the
transom to give me access to the mounting bolts for the rudder. While the
rudder was out I took a couple of quick snaps.

My boat is (was) also a twin lifting keel with
a lifting pivoting rudder. I do not know if this is the arrangement on your
boat, but hopefully the attached pictures will give you an approximate size for
your replacement.

Good sailing

Brian

Brian,

Many thanks - very useful photos. By the way from the photo it looks as if your lifting rudder was a plate of galvanised steel - is this correct? What thickness was your rudder plate if it was galvanised steel pls?

If you could put me in contact with the person who purchased your drop-keel F-21 that would be great as I have made some improvement modifications to the drop keel; mechanism that I would be happy to share with them.

Thanks again - good luck in your new location.

Best regards

Wilf Bishop
