Hi-
I want to rig the spinnaker on my F-25, but I don’t have a retriever
bag (that runs along the lifelines). Could someone send me some
dimensions? I just need the length, and the diameter at both ends and
the middle. I don’t have the fiberglass funnel, so I’ll just have to
make a bag without. I think that is what the 28’s, 32’s etc. do (yes,
no???). I know the F-21 just used a bag without a funnel (used to have
one).
Has anyone tried using an ATN or similar sock? How does it work
compared to the Hoyt retriever bag solution?
Maybe someone has a spare funnel they aren’t using and want to sell???
Thanks, Greg

Yes, the Mull 28-footer has a bag without the GRP funnel that the
Freedom 25 has. There are two criteria for this sleeve. 1. It should
be opaque to UV rays and 2. It should be slippery fabric (or lined
with slippery fabric). You have to figure out dimensions to fit the
top of the bow pulpit and a means to secure it to the pulpit tubing.
The back end, if I recall correctly, is about 6" in diameter. The
length of the sleeve should be long enough to keep the spinnaker
fully covered, when pulled into the bag. Estimate the length by
having someone hold the clews and head while you pull and smooth the
spinnaker toward the retraction patch at the center of the sail.

A friend of mine has been using a bag without a funnel with great success for 10 years on his F25. He just replaced it with a new one that was made at Doyle Sailmakers Service Center in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Since they just replaced it, they should still have the pattern. Please contact Marianne Lynch at Doyle Sailmakers, Inc. (781-639-8086). Hi Herm-
Thanks for the info. As I recollect, the F-28 has a camber-spar jib. Do you know
if the
forestay is attached to the deck? My F-25 has this type of jib and it occurred
to me that
the forestay gets in the way if I were to use the fiberglass scoop. Since I
don’t have that,
and the F-28’s didn’t seem to either, I am hoping that the bag can just be
routed to one
side of the forestay and have it work okay. Is this so, or does it work
differently?
Thanks, Greg

Greg,
The Freedom 28 ( aka 27), is a miniature of the Freedom 30.
It has the camber-spar jib, whose stay goes right to the deck at the
very bow of the hull. It has the reinforced pulpit with a almost
rectangular opening defined by the tubing just like the 25. My 28
came with the spinnaker gear, and the bag/chute is routed down one
side (on my 25, it happened to be the port side). On the 28, the
bag/chute attached to the tubing at the top of the pulpit with
webbing. I can’t remember whether the 28 has snaps or Velcro on the
webbing but either one should do. I haven’t used the spinnaker gear
as yet, but I assume they avoid the forestay since their directions
diverge rapidly, forestay goes up near vertical, and the bag goes aft
to meet the deck. My pivot point for the spinnaker yard is at the
very front, top of the pulpit, very similar to that of my (previous)
25. If you need some pictures, I can go out and take some of the
boat’s front end. Let me know.
