My pump still pumped, but like yours the
gaiter was rotten. I decided to replace everything which I knew hadn’t
been done in 17 years. I kept the old parts as spares since the rubber parts
were still reasonably pliable. And yes, it is the second kit you need.

F-30 Manual bilge pump
Thanks, Doug. The reason I haven’t taken my pump
in to a dealer is
that it isn’t broken, so I really don’t want to
disassemble it. My
surveyor noted that the rubber surrounding the
handle is starting to
crack and suggested that I carry a spare, so my
insurance company
has required it. It does sound like I need
what you referred to as
the second kit.
As to the oven, I’ve tried that without
success. It is another one
of those insurance things; I’ve never used the
oven on a boat yet.
cheers,
Al

Just rebuilt the whale pump in my F 28

Don’t have the kit numbers but even though
our pumps are 1987
vintage
the modern kits still fit. There is no number
on my pump to
reference.
One kit has the inlet and outlet valves and
the main pump bladder
and
takes five minutes to install. A second kit
which has the new
plastic
cover for the newer pumps has the rubber
gaiter which seals around
the
pump handle. This second kit allows you to
install the new style
cover
and replace the gaiter which is nicer looking
than the old 80’s
vintage
cover which shows the exposed pump. I got
both kits at West
Marine, one
of them was on the close out table suggesting
they are no longer
stocking these parts. Take your old pump in
as I did and it was
easy to
match up. My yard spend a month talking to a
Whale distributor in
San
Diego and couldn’t figure it out. I finally
walked into a mega West
Marine Store in Marina Del Ray which stocks
virtually everything
in the
catalogue and wahla, there were the parts.
On the oven, my instructions on the face of
the inside of the oven
door
say to turn on the propane, turn the oven to
the desired
temperature,
and hit the pilot. Mine fired right up this
weekend using those
steps
and we heated up those chicken enchiladas,
they were good and hot!

Subject: [freedomyachts2003] F-30 Manual
bilge pump
I need to buy a spares kit for the Whale
manual bilge pump located
in
the cockpit. Does anyone know what
model it is?
I need to replace the instruments, which are
original. I’d like
to
mount them above the companionway, rather
than at the helm. Does
any
company make an instrument housing for
companionway mounting? I
haven’t found one yet.
Finally (for today), I can’t get the propane
oven to light. The
instructions say to light a range burner,
then press the red
ignitor
button to light the oven. I do; it
doesn’t. The ignitor works;
I’ve
seen the spark. Any thoughts?
Many thanks, as always.
