F-33/35 cabin top rail project

Posted by Alan (akusinitz@…>)

In case any one is interested I just added 8 ft long by about 1 foot
high stainless railings to the cabin top. This has made a huge
difference in safety by providing great handholds when going forward
along the deck. My wooden handrails were too low and way to far
inboard and without stays to grab onto …
I had estimates for the railings from $400-$800 a pair (not including
installation). They are very solid and the start 1 foot forward of the
traveler and end at the forward hanging locker/head. They don’t
interfere with the main sheet reefing lines or vang. As a bonus the
dingy fits quite well between them.

Would love to see photos. Something like that had occurred to me as
well.

I was thinking about it and then on a
daysail on a Freedom 36/38 with Dr. Cady saw that he did a similar railing. It
was a little rough that day and it was a pleasure to have them. That’s
what convinced me to proceed.
The measurements for mine I did to
position the three bases for the railing in spots that were relatively
accessible without completely removing the headliner.
The balsa in the area of the baseplates
and for the bolts was removed and replaced with epoxy mishmash the holes were
drilled and threaded and then stainless backing plates.
The rails are rock solid in the end ,
which was my goal.

I took some photos and posted them in the photos section. The cost
for the railings and bases was $800.

Very nice, indeed, Alan. I recently saw an article in one of my sailing magazines which discussed the advantages of railings much like yours.
