F-33 Haarstick Sails

Posted by Alan (akusinitz@…>)

I’m considering replacing my fully battened (non wishbone) main. After
considering staysails both my sailmaker and I think replacing the main
not only with a new one but cut with an even larger roach (and longer
luff as for some reason the 1996 North sail is 18" below the mast
head) and using tryradial construction to align with the loads would
have more of a performance advantage then anything else.
Has anyone tried a very large roach or the kevlar laminate that
Haarstick describes for the 40/40 on a 33 cat ketch or similar?

Also I like my local sailmaker but wonder if special knowledge is
required like Haarstick has from doing so many freestanding mast sails
for freedoms.

Any input will be appreciated.

Alan:

I can’t respond to your specific questions, but I can say that I am quite pleased with my Haarstick sails.

A good sailmaker can make your sail. I just had one made and am very happy with it. They were very capable of knowing how they are made. As a matter of fact, my cambar spar jib that I replaced was not a Haarstick sail. Someone else had made it.

Ditto. Trying to save for a mizzen replacement now.
