I am getting ready to replace all sanitation hose on our 1995 40/40 which is a two head version. I am having difficulty figuring out how to access the rear holding tank (62 gals). It appears that access would be through the storage space in the center of the boat accessible through the rear cabin. This storage space also holds our 12 gal water heater which would have to be removed and the panel underneath subsequently removed to access the holding tank. Looks like a lot of work to replace hoses. Has anyone done a similar project? thanks for your insights. Paul
Unfortunately you’re correct about having to remove the water heater to get back there. And I had to notch out the bottom of the lip that the removable panel attaches to (if that phrase makes sense) in order for the water heater to come out. I don’t know what hull number you have, as they seem to have changed the layout, so this may not apply to you. However, once it’s out, it’s fairly fast to remove the water heater. For various reasons I seem to do it on a semi-regular basis.
I strongly suggest that you buy the best hoses that you can as the cost of the hoses is minor compared to the pain of doing the job.

If you think thats difficult , you should try replacing the cast iron elbow used in the exhaust line aft of the water heater and muffler, right at the turn of the transom in the bilge on a Freedom 33
Now thats enough to make a grown man cry and wonder "What the XX!! were they thinking!
I feel your pain… and as I read in your post about your 62 gallon holding tank, I find myself wondering what the heck Freedom was thinking when they installed a 12 gallon holding tank on our 1991 Freedom 38. The only saving grace is that the previous owner installed a Vacuflush head that only uses 4 oz of “tank” water for each flush.
Wondering if any F38 owners have replaced the 12 gallon tank with a larger one?
When I purchased our F38, Being There, we had Paul Dennis put in a 30 gallon holding tank under the vee berth. Could tolerate a 12 gallon tank. Happy we did.
I replaced the entire exhaust system in my F33 Hull #55 . Midnightsailor is right, there was much gnashing of teeth and utterance’s. you should probably replace all those hoses and fitting you can get to or you will wish you did some day! Mine fell apart in my hands. these fittings corrode from the inside out. they looked fine from the outside.
I installed a stainless steel 38 gallon custom tank under the port settee.

Thanks to all for the helpful replies. Geoff, I was afraid that the tank was in there. Looks like a good winter project and per your advice I plan to use the best hose available. I hope to make this a once in a lifetime job, at least for me. Smooth sailing to all. Paul
