F21 mast

Posted by sierrasmith71 (sierrasmith71@…>)

I pulled the mast on my new (to me) hull #234 F21 this weekend. I
wanted to put on a VHF antenna and an anchor light and a new windex…I
was surprised to find
that the mast did not have a cap on it! There was only the remains of
some very old black electrical wound around the very top, but that was
it. This was a set back as I had the services of two friends to help
and needed to get it done in one afternoon. So we went “scrounging”
around the boatyard for a solution. We found a plastic cap from a 55
gallon drum that was just shy of the correct diameter…some duck tap
and four self tapping SS screws did the trick…a tight fitting cap that
we mounted the light to.

The whole procedure took about 4.5 hours, up and down. I made an A
frame from 2x3’s per the instructions on www.freedom21.info.

One question came up during the afternoon from one of my friends who is
an experienced sailor; “…will the F21 exceed the calculated hull
speed in any point of sail?” He though tthat it would really scoot!
Anyone out there know?

Moving forward, when you have the mast out again (or anyone else for
that matter) I used the 3.5” size of the round pole cap and sealed it
with a silicone caulk. It fits almost as if it were made for the mast.

I’ll post pictures as soon as I’m able to on the F21 group
site.

Thermoplastic Pole
Caps

Keep moisture and dirt from getting
inside poles. As you insert the cap stem into the pole, the spring straps at
the base of the cap bend. This creates force against the inside of the pole
to hold the cap securely in place. Great for indoor and outdoor use, caps are
made of glass-filled polyester for UV-, weather-, and chemical-resistance.
Hardness is Shore D85. Temp. range is -40° to +400° F. Color
is black.

Art,

I just bought “Winners Bitch” and I am having to replace the wiring
for the anchor light and the VHF antena and the old cover for the
mast is done in.

It sound like you have the solution. The only thing you didn’t
mention was where to purchase the pole caps and I didn’t catch the
manufacturers name.
