F21 sailinf slower on stbd. tack

Posted by mitbok1 (mitbok1@…>)

Have noticed that my F21 is sailing slower with wind to port,
particularly on the reach.
Yesterday I installed Speedmate knotmeter and it confirmed my earlier
observations.
While on port tack speed would reach 4.5-5 kts but on starboard I would
not go above 3 kts !
Only reason I can think of is spinnaker bag and pole that are
perpendicular to the wind, but can they create enough drug to cost me 2
kts ?!

Hi,
Nothing more frustrating then that.
Do no think the spinnaker is at fault.
Does your boat sit straight up in her slip on a windless day?
In other words, is she even balasted?
Are you perhaps sailing with your eyes on a wind direction meter and
is it possible that the masttop windvane needs lining out? Even a few
degrees out of line can sometimes make a big difference.

I see a speed difference on my port and starboard tacks. The knotmeter (and this has been true with two different ones over time) It is not as great as your difference ( 1/2 -1 knot) . I believe it is due to water flow/turbulence over the transducer and my GPS confirms this (including at slack tide). The transducer is on the port side of the keel. I’ve had an old data marine and currently have the micronet wireless. We prefer the readings on the port tack which are higher.

Check your speed with a GPS. A knotmeter tranducer can easily
malfunction on different tacks. Are you using a staysail mounted to
the eye on top of the gunmount tube. If so, the tack will not be in
the same spot on different tacks, because the eye is not centered on
top of the tube; this makes one tack favored over the other. Use your
main halyard to measure the distance from the top of the mast, to the
bottom of the stanchion on each side; this will show if your mast is
centered; if it is not, use the wedges at the deck to center it. If
none of this helps, adjust your main/staysail to get more speed. I’ve
had two F21s, and I had to readjust the main on each one, after
tacking or gybing. Most of the time it’s not the boat or rig, but the
set of the sails that makes the difference in boat speed. “When in
doubt, let it out”. Happy sailing. Charlie

Sail her with symmetrical sail trim - Set the traveler
to the exact same offset on both tacks, don’t touch
the mainsheet or boomwang when tacking.

Sail up into the wind until the sail start backfilling

  • then backoff to gain speed.

Ignore your windvane

Do this on both tacks until you got the feel for it.

There is supposed to be a small difference because the
waves are not running straight downwind, they never
do.

Your motor has too be out of the water unless it is
blowing really hard - in gear it will rob you of 2
knots.
