I have a small, persistent leak which seems to be coming from where the stuffing
box hose
meets the shaft log. Does anyone know what the hose is attached to? Are there
any diagrams
available? I’m thinking the leak is a bad hose. But is it possible for the stern
tube itself to fail?
Has anyone ever heard of this happening?
I would not be surprised is the stern tube itself is cracked.
Possibly the PO tightened the hose clamps too much. On my boat the
PO’s ruined the waterlock intake pipe by doing that.
The cure could be easy; just push the hose a bit further over the
stern tube, if there’s room for that.

It looks like the hose is actually attached to a bronze shaft log which is
covered with a fiberglass cowling. Is this correct? If that’s the case, removal
and replacement of the shaft log (stern tube) would involve cutting and
reglassing.
I’m hoping that it’s only the hose that has either cracked or otherwise
deteriorated enough to allow water to seep. What bothers me is that when the
clamps are tightened, the leak increases. Meanwhile, no word from the yard as to
when they’re going to haul the boat out. I’d like to get it fixed because I
intend to sell the boat and don’t want to foist this problem on the new owners.
