F30 In-boom reefing

Posted by ajlorman (ajlorman@…>)

Despite having replaced virtually the entire in-boom reffing system,
I
continue to have friction that literally prevents the main from going
up. I replaced all the exterior blocks with ball-bearing Garhauers.
I
used the corect size line. I cleaned out the junk in the boom. The
one thing I didn’t change was the odd-looking double block that moves
forwards and backwards as you raise the main or reef it. That part is
available from Rig-Rite, but it didn’t seem to be binding. My
thought was, that if it needed changing, I would replace it with two
Garhauer blocks attached by their shackles. Has anyone had a similar
issue?

Many thanks.

When I took apart my boom and replaced my reefing lines (on my F-33 with isomats) my sailormaker recommended removing the double block. It doesn’ t add any mechanical advantage and does add friction. Its intended to force both ends to come down evenly so I was a little leery. However I removed it and went to the single line and it works quite well. Can’t be sure if this will resolve your issue or if we had the same setup.

I’m not very imaginative. After you remove the double block, how do you rig it?

If its the same as mine the line is deadended around the boom, comes down through the block at the end of boom to the front of the boom then down and up through external blocks (one on the sail in my case and several on the mast collar.

If I read you right, you are stowing the sail with the reefing lines
snugged and neat and then hoisting the sail, pulling out the reefing
lines at the same time. Absolutely too much friction no matter what
you do. Leave the reefing lines loose at their fully extended length
and you only hoist the sail, not everything else along with it. With
a liberal application of “Saikote” on the slides and the vang and
main sheet loose, I can manhaul my F36 main to the top with no
sweat. Same goes for shaking out a reef. Before you hoist, pull out
extra reef line at the end of the boom. Eases the hoist enormously.

Thanks. I will give it a try. But what surprises me is not that there’s friction when I haul up the main, but that it comes to a complete halt. That sounds like something binding, rather than friction.
