F30 Newbie Questions

Posted by TJ Parrent (free2decide2005@…>)

I recently looked at a F30 I’m interested in buying. The day I looked at the
boat was a day or
two after a hard rain. I noticed a fair amount of clean water underneath the
engine and also
the carpet around the mast step in the v-berth was wet. It didn’t appear that
there was any
water leaking from the engine so perhaps it was coming from the companion way.
In the
case of the v-berth the only things I can think of are the mast partner or
sheave box. This is
a new rig to me so I am interested to hear if anyone has any ideas about the
causes.

Additionally, there was a lot of silicon around the mast partner. The silicon
was about 3 - 4
inches high and covered what looked like a boot that did not fit tightly and
something else,
but I’m not sure what. There seemed to be a lot going on there compared to
other Freedom
mast partners I have seen. Not sure if it’s an issue but you can see a photo at
http://homepage.mac.com/cyclebloke/PhotoAlbum72.html. I would greatly
appreciate any
help anyone can offer.

I do plan to have the boat surveyed but want to answer these initial questions.

Thanks,
TJ

Well, I had a look at your mast partner pic, and it sure looks like
a messy repair of leaking. Silicone on top of bolt heads…yuk! If
I bought the boat, the first thing I would do was remove all the goo
(completely removing silicone is almost impossible, so on my boat
there’s a death penalty for using silicone; that stuff is only good
for aquariums).

Next, I would remove the mast ring, because it’s obviously leaking.
Also remove all the goo on, in and under it.

Then I would check and redo the mast wedge (or wedges) to make sure
the mast is fixed to the deck.

If the wedges are stil good, I would use them, if not, I would buy a
set of Spartite and set the mast with that.

Next, the mast ring can be caulked to the deck with a decent marine
caulk (not silicone, in my case, I use Bostik caulk tape). Some
caulk under the bolt heads to prevent weeping alongside the threads.

The edge of the mastring around the top edge can be filled with
caulk now.

Then I would buy a new mast boot and long stainless hoseclamps to
create the last seal.

A boat with this problem would not scare me away, although an owner
that repairs leaks like you showed on the pic is not a good
caretaker of a boat and should warn you for more sloppy maintenance
jobs. I would not be surprised if he never changed an oil or fuel
filter in his life.

Good luck.

this is a little late and maybe OBE but regarding the
water.

My 30 drops water through the mast as a result of rain
getting into the halyard openings including the main
halyard sheeve. Its not a lot of water but if not
dealt with its enough to rot the sole and the foot of
the bulkhead that is very close to the base of the
mast. There have been numerous cases of rot at this
location and my boat was one of them.

After I bot the boat and figured out what was going
on, I had to do some woodwork on the sole and on the
foot of the bulkhead to repair the rot. I also built a
little cofferdam out of west epoxy around the mast
base to route the water into the bilge. Works like a
champ.

Re the water under the engine. In my boat there was a
pesky leak through the companionway. Took me a while
to smoke it out. What was happening was water was
wicking down the side of the plexiglass companionway
doors and dropping into the cabin just behind the top
of the stairs (behind where that little box is under
the top step). During a good rainstorm the water would
leak down there onto the engine and into the sump. I
fixed this one by installing a companionway hatch
cover I made out of waterproof vinyl. This has the
added benefit of protecting the varnish on the
companionway slide and the trim on the sides.
