F30 wheel size

Posted by ajlorman (ajlorman@…>)

I’m thinking of putting a larger wheel on the Edson pedestal on my
F30. What’s the largest size anyone has fit on a 30? (I know, I
could have measured. I forgot to do it Sunday whne I had my first
sail of the season.)

Many thanks.

Al: As I have written before, would rather convert to tiller…but I am taking the larger wheel route to get better leverage and so that I can sit comfortably on the weather combing. I have measured a number of times and keep coming up with good clearance for a 40 inch diameter wheel. May go with a 36 inch model but will make that choice next week. Found a good source in Tampa but haven’t seen the wheels yet. Note, that the propane locker will not open with a wheel in the 36 in. plus range. Fargo:

I’m surprised that a 40 would work, but who’s to argue with actual measurements? Let me know if you decide to get a 36" wheel. I have found an unbelievable price (so unbelievable, that I’ll believe it when it is delivered). I’m not terribly concerned about the propane locker; I rarely use it.

Well, I installed my new 36" wheel yesterday and you’re absolutely
right…a 40" wheel will also fit. I would not have suspected
that to be the case. I think the 36" will do fine with the stern
rail seats I’m in the process of fabricating.

Anyone out there want to buy a lovely used 32" Edson wheel? Or find
out where I bought a 36" Edson for at about half price?

Funny, Al: I just picked up our new 36 inch wheel today in Tampa at a Marine Surplus shop…new China production. I scaled down our plan to 36 inch because I could not find a longer autopilot belt to clear anything larger. Will tryout and report results. Would love to hear more about your experience. I have a Raymarine Wheelpilot, so the wheel size is of no consequence. While the 40" would fit, I think it is a bit bigger than I wanted. (I actually kept banging into the 36" wheel while I installed a new cup/binocular holder on the pedestal.) I did not have time to actually test my new wheel this weekend, but I could feel a noticeable difference in simply being able to reach it from the coamings. I’m not going to finalize the pattern for the stern rail seats until I’ve actually sailed with the new wheel for a while. Stay tuned.

Al,

I ignored this post for a long time but while I was
bashing up San Pablo bay hanging on for dear life a
couple weeks ago your post came suddenly to mind. I
was hunched over on the windward coaming grabbing at
the wheel. How nice, I thought, an extra 4 inches
would be.

Humm - that doesn’t sound quite right.

Anyway, I would like to know where you got your larger
diameter wheel at a killer price.

Mike:

Here’s the link: http://www.drmarine.com/products.asp?cat=61. I paid $210 (plus modest shipping) for the new wheel and sold my old one in one day on Craigslist for $150.

If I had to do it over, I might actually consider going with a 38" or 40" wheel (though you’d have to find a different source). The 36" wheel does make a big difference, but the larger sizes would make it even easier to steer from the coaming. Note that with the 36" wheel, you cannot open the propane locker without taking the wheel off. I don’t cruise much, so that is not a big issue.

Mike: While we wait for Al’s response, let me tell you where I bought my 36 in. wheel. http://stores.ebay.com/OUTLAW-MARINE-SURPLUS Nice fellow…but quality a little iffy: 1. Diameter of hub was large…overbored. Ended up asking for a replacement which was supplied…but was still a bit large. Now use a brass shim to take up the slack. 2. Keyway was not solid throughout the hub length…as on a true Edson wheel, so make a special hand filed key to give tight fit. 3. Diameter and runout of wheel rim (wobble) well shy of Edson quality. 4. Rusty spots show up quickly on salty spots. But… price was about $185 and it made a big difference in the way the boat sailed. F30s
need a large wheel for the leverage when the seas and wind kicks up. I would have used a 40 inch wheel, which was available for the same price…but could not find a longer belt for my autopilot. On my F-33 I went from a 32 to a 40 inch
wheel and it fits great and is a big plus sitting on the coaming.

Mike:

Here’s the link: http://www.drmarine.com/products.asp?cat=61. I paid $210 (plus modest shipping) for the new wheel and
sold my old one in one day on Craigslist for $150.

\

If I had to do it over, I might actually
consider going with a 38" or 40" wheel (though you’d have to find a
different source). The 36" wheel does make a big difference, but the
larger sizes would make it even easier to steer from the coaming. Note
that with the 36" wheel, you cannot open the propane locker without taking
the wheel off. I don’t cruise much, so that is not a big issue.

Al,

I ignored this post for a long time but while I was
bashing up San Pablo
bay hanging on for dear life a
couple weeks ago your post came suddenly to mind. I
was hunched over on the windward coaming grabbing at
the wheel. How nice, I thought, an extra 4 inches
would be.

Humm - that doesn’t sound quite right.

Anyway, I would like to know where you got your larger
diameter wheel at a killer price.

Note, that the propane locker will not open with

Nice fellow…but quality a little iffy:

F30s need a large wheel for the leverage when the seas and wind kicks up. I would have used a 40 inch wheel, which was available for the same price…but could not find a longer belt for my autopilot.

Hello All,

I am thinking about taking the plunge to buy a F32 Hoyt design from Yacht World. Can anyone recommend a particularly good surveyor in either New York or Alameda, CA? I am particularly concerned about having the mast and rig inspected. Anyone have any other words of caution or advice?

BTW, there are a number of wheels available from Edson. Their catalog offers a quick release cap for quickly and easily changing the wheel.

They were also pitching a new pedestal with mounts for instruments. They claim they can be purchased for around $1800.

Thanks for your help!

Hi John,
I don’t have a recommendation, but plunge away!! If it’s been well
maintained, you should have a lot of fun with it. It’s a great cruising
boat, comfortable for 4 and perfect for 2.
Good Luck,
