On my F-33 I went from a 32 to a 40 inch
wheel and it fits great and is a big plus sitting on the coaming.

Here’s the link: http://www.drmarine.com/products.asp?cat=61. I paid $210 (plus modest shipping) for the new wheel and
sold my old one in one day on Craigslist for $150.

If I had to do it over, I might actually
consider going with a 38" or 40" wheel (though you’d have to find a
different source). The 36" wheel does make a big difference, but the
larger sizes would make it even easier to steer from the coaming. Note
that with the 36" wheel, you cannot open the propane locker without taking
the wheel off. I don’t cruise much, so that is not a big issue.

Al,
I ignored this post for a long time but while I was
bashing up San Pablo
bay hanging on for dear life a
couple weeks ago your post came suddenly to mind. I
was hunched over on the windward coaming grabbing at
the wheel. How nice, I thought, an extra 4 inches
would be.
Humm - that doesn’t sound quite right.
Anyway, I would like to know where you got your larger
diameter wheel at a killer price.

Well, I installed my new 36" wheel yesterday and
you’re absolutely
right…a 40" wheel will also fit. I would not
have suspected
that to be the case. I think the 36" will do fine
with the stern
rail seats I’m in the process of fabricating.
Anyone out there want to buy a lovely used 32" Edson
wheel? Or find
out where I bought a 36" Edson for at about half
price?

As I have written before, would rather convert

I am taking the larger wheel route to get better
leverage and so
that I can sit comfortably on the weather combing.
I have measured
a number of times and keep coming up with good
clearance for a 40
inch diameter wheel. May go with a 36 inch model
but will make
that choice next week. Found a good source in Tampa
but haven’t
seen the wheels yet.
Note, that the propane locker will not open with
a wheel in the
36 in. plus range.

Many thanks.
