F32 Hoyt Rudder post stuffing box

Posted by miloblues04 (miloblues@…>)

I own a 1985 Hoyt Freedom 32 with a leaking Rudder post stuffing box;
Does anyone know the diameter of teflon flax required ???

Also - what kind of grease is recommended for the rudder post grease
fitting?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated,
Milo

Milo,

There was a thread about this dating from about 6/14. If you have access to the archives, take a look at the originals. The jist was that no one came up with the packing diameter directly giving a ‘pull some out and measure it’. As far as the grease is concerned, I just ‘juiced’ our rudder up with a waterproof lithium based grease.

I intend to repack the rudder shaft on our F32 sometime this month (it’s one of the next things on the project sheet), baring unforeseen employment. I’ll post the packing size on this group for posterity.

I believe the rudder uses 2 rings of 1/2" square packing (that’s
what I use anyway) but I’m not absolutely sure. 1/2" seems a bit
snug but 7/16" seems too loose. I’m interested in what anyone
figures out for sure.

Grease is whatever you like that is waterproof, but don’t use
anything with graphite or you’ll potentially set up an electroysis
situation (so I’m told, anyway.) Please look at the position of the
grease fittings while you’re in there, too. I sure looks to me like
they squirt the grease in the wrong place?

It seems the real trick is tensioning the bazillion bolts just
right. If you have a good technique for telling how tight “just
right” is and also getting them all the same tension, please tell me.

I’d dearly love to here from others about the details of this
process. I can’t seem to get that great helm feel I used to have.
What am I doing wrong?

I plan to use a torque wrench at a low setting for consistency. If there is enough force to conform the packing to the shaft without binding it should not leak as long as its the same tension all the way around.

The June topic for rudder post packing was for my F32.

I used one 2 foot strand of 1/2 inch teflon flax packing from West
Marine (part number 136566). I cut one end on a diagional, looped it
around the post, gave it some play since I did not want it taut, and
cut the matching diagional on the other end. I pushed it in
carefully so that it did not twist.

I put the bolts on finger tight then used a ratchet to turn each
bolt about 5 times. The final tightening was done using a micro-
calipher to keep the flange even all the way around as I seated it.

There seemed to be a bit of seepage the first couple days, but none
since.

A light duty torgue wrench is the way to go. On my H32 I use a good quality grease gun with an 18" flexible extension to insure reaching all of the zerks. As far as distribution of the grease, I turn the wheel hard over to hard over a few times, put in a few more shots, and I’m in business. Never had a leak problem, or binding of any kind (touch wood).john reed <john-reed@…> wrote:
