This weekend I had 8 people aboard looking at our new (to us) '84. I
noticed the bilge pump going off every 90 seconds, grabbed a
flashlight and chased down the leak.
With 1,000 lbs of meat in the cockpit the water was overflowing the
round fitting in the hull that the rudder post fits into. (Sorry,
I’m new and don’t have all the terms down) It looked just like a
toilet overflowing. Once I chased several folks off the boat rose
enough to stop.
Any and all advice would be most appreciated !

If old packing, repack, otherwise tighten all (8 I think) bolts symmettrically around the flange perimeter. Turn each bolt same number of times, otherwise will cause assymmetric pressure and wear on the assembly. Not too tight, just enough to stop water ingress, otherwise steering will be too tight and packing will simply compress and wear out faster. Also must grease the 2 zerk (sic???) fittings at the base of the rudder post flange assembly (and don’t forget the 2 others most inconveniently located at the top near the deckhead). The regreasing, believe it or not, is recommended by Freedom at monthly intervals. Dogs work! Anyway, good luck.

Speaking of greasing the F32 rudder post, what kind of grease is recommended for this job?

Thanks Kevin,
I was worried if I take off the 8 bolts in the flange perimeter my
rudder would drop, but I take it that is an unnecessary worry?

No, rudder only drops if you remove the through-bolted collar under the helmsman’s seat, and then it would still be stopped by the steering quadrant coupled around the rudder stock (but by that time, if you were in the water, it could get very messy indeed).

I’ve been using lithium grease, but suspect any type of waterproof (resistant) grease would suffice as the grease points should be greased at least a couple of times each season.

Kevin, you have been so helpful, I want to bother you with two more
questions:
Do you know what diameter packing I should order?
I have found huge number of items aboard the F32 since the previous
owner had walked away from it a couple years ago. One unknown item
was a dark green rectangular block of what looks like either
modeling clay or C4 ;-). I now wonder he knew of the problem and
purchased this for packing. I know you have no way of being sure,
but has anyone used something other than Teflon flax packing?
Thanks, Merrick

Can’t recall actual packing size (its cross-section is square - not circular) but if you yank out some of the old stuff it will become immediately apparent - the new packing should be approx the same size as the old stuff. Regards the green stuff - don’t know the old owner’s occupation, but don’t try sticking 12V DC wires into the sides (grin). Doesn’t sound like any sort of packing I’ve ever heard of tho. If repacking yourself, remember to wrap the new stuff around the shaft barrel 3 times, cut all three wraps at a 45 degree angle (approx) and then when installing them stagger them at 120 degrees to each other (so cuts are not aligned - which might allow more H20 ingress than otherwise)
