The internal rudder post on my (Mull) F32 has a couple of grease nipples installed - one at the top and one at the bottom. Does anyone know:- (a) how often grease needs to be applied and (b) the grade of grease that should be used. Many thanks in anticipation of your replies. David F32/124

David,
You need a high grade waterproof grease, like you use for the stern
tube. Lower grade grease degrades and becomes corrosive when in
contact with salt water for a long time. I would say greasing once a
year should be sufficient.

I would point out that greasing once a year might not be frequently
enough if you sail often or in vigorous conditions. The skipper of of
the 32 that did the Atlantic posted an article about a system that
allowed for greasing the fittings from the cockpit locker because he
found he had to do it way more often than he liked. In fact we just
returned from a two week cruise along the northern California coast. We
thought we had greased the fittings recently but by the second day on
the ocean we found that “recently” wasn’t recent enough.
