F33/35 CK: converting rig

Posted by spjwpja (spjwpja@…>)

Thanks for the specs (below). To make the sail handling simpler and
reduce the costs of future sails I thought it would be best to alter
the traditional doble sail/wishbone rig to a single sail track/boom
rig. Does anyone have any usful advise on the pros and cons of
makling this change (with carbon fibre mats).

Tall Rig: Luff 38’ 9" Leech 41’ 4" Area 402’
Mizzen:
Luff 30’ 6" Leech 32’ 6" Foot 11’ 0" Area 218’
Large Staysail

Small Staysail
Luff 34’ 6" Leech 32’ 0" Foot 8’ 6" Area 136’

For the tall rig main the numbers are handwritten and no foot
measurement is shown.

I am thinking of changing the rig - did you say you have specs
for
a
fully batterned rig?

I
don’t have a staysail but have some freedom specs for the
converted
full battened rig. Not sure they’d be the same. Someone else who
actually has staysails may have some improvements and there are
messages on this if you use the search feature and search for
staysail".

I have no experience with the original rig. The conversion was done before I purchased the boat supposedly by Freedom. It works well with the full batten sails. The track is riveted on with some sort of bedding compound to prevent the aluminum track from electrolysis. The gooseneck fittings on mine are throughbolted and have held up very well. I notice newer freedom have wraparound fittings for attaching the gooseneck. All later model freedoms have the sail tracks on the CF masts and no wishbones.

Drilling any hole or slot in a composite spar may lead to severe stress problems. It is best to use a band or wraparound fiting.
