F33 Blister causes - when started / later boats / water temp?

Posted by yottydotty (mikedavidwilliams@…>)

I am looking to buy a F33 in as good condition as I can find to export
to N Europe and am comparing a couple of F33’s on the market. Both are
later models, One is relatively late model and has never had blisters.
Another is slightly older and has had blisters repaired and bottom
barrier coated.
From searching in these forums (which are great) It seems like TPI
didnt change their resins to isopthalic till 84/85 so I wonder if it
is just a matter of time in a cooler climate for a boat without
blisters and without a barrier coat.
Have some had blisters only start appearing recently? Do you think
water temp is main factor? What sort of climate have others had
blisters / remained blister free on F33’s?
As a sound hull is an important factor does anyone have input on the
pros and cons between the above?
Thanks
Mike

Having read most of the material on this site for many years, I can
only assume that Freedoms as a group are remarkably blister free.

Ketch 22, an F39 commissioned in 84, has had no blisters or blister
repair work. She spent the first 15 years in warm water near
Galveston Texas, and the last 8 years in cold San Francisco Bay waters.

I think all older boats will develop blisters sooner or later.
Colder climate and winterstorage on shore will probably delay it for
quite some years. Regular barrier treatment, preferably starting
when the boat is new, will also help delay blisters. On the other
hand, blisters are not a big deal; they are part of the game, as is
rust on vintage cars. Blisters however, are treated easier than rust.
