F33 ketch dreamin

Posted by leantruc (leantruc@…>)

After decades of dreaming and looking, I’m hung up on the F33 cat
ketch. I need input from anyone regarding anything/everything about
these boats. I would also like to test drive one or atleast board one,
but they seem to be quite rare in the San Francisco bay area.
Leads anyone? No e-mail; please respond to this group address.
Thanks for your help. cc

If you’ld like to chat by phone let me know. I have F-33 Hull #51 its the shallow draft fixed keel version with the rig converted to sail tracks, full battens, and normal booms. Its in the Northeast. If you like you can find my work phone at www.softwarecpr.com.
I recently spoke with Jay E. Paris the original designer of the F-33 and have some input from him as well.
Regards,
Alan

Greetings,

It is great to hear interest in the F33. I’ve been
a live-aboard on Freedom Song, hull #25, for six years
now and love her. Any qualms I’ve had have been
minuscule next to the positives. She still has her
wrap-around sails and wishbone booms, along with the
fixed keel. Once the sails are trimmed and tweaked,
you can let her sail on her own, and the rig is
balanced w/just the main up. As I had never
experienced a boat sailing on its own without
autopilot, I was a bit giddy the first time but had to
take the helm after over an hour without touching the
wheel because there was an island in the way.
If I have too much sail area up, she slogs
through the water, but once reefed she handles
beautifully. The previous boat was an Islander 30
sloop, and as a single-hander I was nervous a good bit
of the time. It felt squirrelly and you couldn’t
leave the helm without the autopilot, and any heeling
over 28 degrees or so started feeling like too much.
This one is much more solid-feeling in the water with
the full-and-fin keel combo.
It would be nice if there was more room in the
lazarettes, but storage down below is fantastic.
Right now under the v-berth I have: two bags of
emergency sails, a taken apart full-size mountain
bike, a 5000ci backpack filled with gear, a radar
reflector, two sleeping bags, and no doubt half a
dozen other things I’m forgetting. It’s pretty big
down below. The two hanging lockers are deep and
shelved.
Unfortunately I don’t live that close to
you(Bellingham, WA just on the Canadian border,)and
she’s hauled out for a motor rebuild, etc.

Let me know if you have any particular questions.
Best regards,
Brandt

We have an F-33 in San Diego. It is, however, in the midst of a major refit. If you want to see a finished product, you would need to wait or look elsewhere. L’Audace has lots of parts at the sail loft, the rigger’s shop and our garage. We hope to be sailing in May. The positive note is that L’Audace will definitely be at the dock to look at and explore.
