F35 Automatic Bilge Pump

Posted by sitchmo (sylvanm@…>)

We have a 1993 automatic bilge pump that works fine when we are on the
boat but when we leave it and return the following weekend the fuse is
always blown. This has been happening for our last two weekends on the
boat.

The electric pump works fine, but I have had to replace with a bigger
amp fuse.

Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks -

Perhaps the suction mouth fills with debris (paper is notorious) and
keeps on runnning too long with a blocked input so the current
rating gets too high?

Be careful with replacing a fuse with a heavier one; this may result
in burned wires, a burned pump or worst case: fire.

Thanks again Michael. I could not find the manual for the bilge pump
switch. It is a Johnson/Mayfair. The online manual rated the fuse at
15 amps, but the fuse that was in the switch was 7.5 amps.

I put the 15 amp in there because of the online manual so I think this
should be OK. I just thought it was strange that it had a 7.5 amp fuse
in it. That is the fuse rating for a 24 volt system, not a 12 volt
system. I also think it is a bit odd that we spent three days on the
boat and the bilge pump works fine. We leave and the 7.5 amp fuse went.

Any further insights would be appreciated. Mac
