F36 vs F38

Posted by clferrer (chris.ferrer@…>)

Hi all-

The F36 and the F38 seem to differ only in that the F38 has a sugar
scoop stern.

Are the boats otherwise identical save for a few evolutionary changes
made between the models?

That’s my understanding, although the 38 had a wing keel option in addition to the shoal and deep keels available on the 36.

I own a Freedom 36 with an extension that was added. It is exactly the same as the 38. I have been on both and there are virtually no differences except the extension.

I own a 36+2. A 1986 commissioned 36 with a
beautifully executed later 2 foot sugar scoop
extension. [Thanks again for your methodicalness, Sir
Brian Guptil.] The differences that I note in later,
from-the-very-onset 38’s, are that some have an
additional sliding lucite smoked plastic locker in the
galley on the aft port bulkhead, and a smaller
horizontal surface in the saloon forward and
starboard. This being attributal to TPI having
included a deeper hanging locker there. And so, eating
into the available space for the spot one enjoys
parking her laptop and playing (gulp) DVD’s while out
at remote anchor. Calumny. For other things we’ve
maybe not noted, call St. Mark Edwards, back at the
yard. Of note, I walked a friend past a gorgeous 36 in
Seattle’s Elliott Bay YC two months back. Owner
unknown, boat not for sale. We both thought it was a
38. Until we went looking for the sugar scoop
extension. Nope, just a lovingly maintained 36. You’d
have to assume, not so much is different…

Kindest regards, JaciMac, Bellingham, WA State
