F45 Rudder Play

Posted by goldbdan (goldbdan@…>)

Our rudder on our F45 has a fair amount of play. She is on the hard
at the moment, and you can grab the rudder and move it about 5 or 10
degrees. Could explain some problems we had last summer.

Anyway, anyone else have this experience and do you know of the
cause and cure? I guess I’m most interested in F45 experiences, but
this surely could occur at on any model.

Thanks,

DG

Most likely needs new packing in the stern gland. I had similar problem after boat laid up in yard for 3 years (and packing presumably dried out), and not knowing better, assumed it just needed greasing. Did that and all seemed well, but then launched off across Atlantic, and spent next 4 weeks pumping like **** during storms, or tightening up the gland nuts till there was little leakage, but VERY stiff steering. Seem to remember 90 pumps or so on the manual bilge pump every 30 minutes when the weather was rocking and rolling.

Me, too. We have had water coming up through the
rudder post…twice now…in about 6 years. We had
the yard put in packing…but I guess it’s time again.
It’s one thing to see water down below…if it’s fresh
water…it’s a problem…if it"s salt water is a
PROBLEM. It seems to happen most when we are in heavy
weather…or under full power and the stern is down in
the water.

Kevin,
I am the new owner of a Freedom 38 and just went through a survey
which stated that there was play in the rudder. I contacted Freedom
yachts and they referred me to Warren River Boatworks, Paul Dennis
(?), owner. He use to work for Freedom. Paul explained that Freedom
built in some play in the rudder. Approx. 1 to 2 inches at the
bottom of the rudder blade. He explained that if the bearing was to
tight it could cause the rudder to seize under load. Paul’s phone
number is: 401-245-6949.

Thanks, but the excess play was actually causing binding at high heel/loading. IE coming across Bay of Biscay in 45 kts winds, when piched up the rudder would bind in gusts. Had to replace complete stainless rudder post sleeve at bottom hinge point, which was out of round apparently from factory. Maybe this was designed in, don’t know, but replacing this has fixed the leakage & binding problems, and the rudder doesn’t bind anymore, even in severe loading conditions.
