I’m been looking for a 33 CK - I’ve found one with quite bit
crazing(small cracks in the gel-coat)- I’m wondering if this presents
a large problem or if there is a cheap fix? Any other input about
Freedom-33 would be most helpful---- thanks a bunch-

Jim,
Hopefully welcome to our club. The crazing is probably superficial
like on the boats of many of us. My 1981 F44 was badly crazed. I had
the whole deck (and hull) spraypainted. The painters sanded the deck,
ground open with a dremel the widest cracks, filled the crazes with
brush-on filler twice with sanding in between and than put on a nice
Awlgrip system. This was quite expensive, as you’ll understand. But
since it’s mostly labor you’re paying, you could save a lot when doing
the job yourself. You don’t necessarily have to use spray paint; brush
paint works well. And it does not take an expert painter to fill and
sand a deck, it just takes patience and elbow steam.
Hope this helps.

Hey Michel,What product did you use as a brush on filler? In the past I’ve always taken an old style can opener sharpened to a tighter point and "v"ed out the cracks, filled with marine fairing compound, sanded, primed, painted. Your way sounds much nicer.George— On Sat, 11/22/08, michel.capel <michel.capel@…> wrote:From: michel.capel <michel.capel@…>Subject: [FreedomOwnersGroup] Re: Feeed back- Freedom 33 Cat KetchTo: FreedomOwnersGroup@yahoogroups.comDate: Saturday, November 22, 2008, 5:15 AM

George,
The can opener sounds like a smart idea too. About the brush-on
filler: I had the paint job done professionally, so I only know that
it was an Awlgrip product. It could also have been a thickened primer;
these professional painters are quite creative in adapting their
two-component ingredients to their needs.

George,
You might want to look for products with names like “high build primer” or
“sanding primer”. I suspect that the stuff the pro’s used for Michel could have
been something like that. I’ve done some two-part painting, but never used this
sort of product yet.
We also have a F33 (1981) and the gelcoat has some crazing on ours too. The
prior owner put some sort of rubbery non-skid paint on top of it, and the cracks
just went right through…it probably happened within a year. We do have
stress cracks in places, and have done balsa replacement repairs in other places
on the deck…but the crazing doesn’t seem to indicate any problems other than
cracked paint or gelcoat.
