Hi to the group from Falmouth, UK.
I’m intereested in a fin keel Freedom 35 (Hoyt) which is for sale in the UK.
I’ve seen no
mention of such in the group. Does anyone have experience/knowledge of fin
keeled
Freedoms? She’s an ‘oldish’ boat, built around 83 in the UK but not launched
until 91. Draft is
1.8 metres. From the few Freedoms I’ve seen here in the UK, they’re great boats,
although I’ve
not sailed one yet and if I go ahead with a purchase I’ll be looking to convert
to junk rig
(which I’ve sailed for 30 years) for even saner crusing.

I believe the UK
35 is the same as the US
33. Cat ketches. The UK
35 just counts the length of the anchorsprit.
I have an F-33 with the shoal draft keel
(not centerboard).
Love it. Easy to sail downwind wing on
wing and all other points of sail.

In the UK several fin keeled F35 (US = F33 ck) catketches have been
built. I’ve owned and sailed a centerboard F33/35ck (UK built) for 8
years. My guess is the finkeeled version will point almost as high
as the centerboard version (which has almost 8’ draught). The
advantage of the fin keeler is the roomy interior without the huge
centerboard trunk. Conversion to junk rig is of course possible, but
I suggest that you first experience the freedom rig and then decide
whether you still want to convert to junk rig. You might be
pleasantly surprised by the ease of handling of the Freedom rig.

Thanks for your response re my earlier posting concerning an F33 with
deep fin keel that’s for sale over here.
The boat is in the water and the owner is currently awol, and the
selling agent doesn’t know what shape the keel is likely to be. The
draft is 5 ft 11 inches and the displacement 12650 lbs. Does anyone
know whether this is likely to be a long or deep. From my quick look
it’s bolted on, not encapsulated.
Re my suggestion to try the rig before I change to junk. I would do
that, but it would have to be some great rig to convince me that junk
isn’t best.
If this boat was built in the UK, it must be a fin keel version,
according to the original Freedom 35 brochure, the hull of the CB
version has 3’6" and the long keel version has 4’2" draft.
I suppose these measurements are approx. the same for the US F33, as
the hull is the same as on the UK F35 catketch.
