Fitting a fish finder to a F33 ketch

Posted by arrancomrades (arrancomrades@…>)

Hello,
My old Stowe depth souder is on its last legs and I want to replace it
with a fish finder, probably the wee Garmin one. Any ideas about
mounting the transducer? I’m not keen on transom mount and will
probably put it through the hull amidships, well out on the starboard
bilge - accepting that it will not work when well heeled.

One thought is to cut out the inner shell and the balsa and epoxy a
plastic cylinder to the outer GRP shell to put the transducer in oil
which is supposed to enhance thru-hull performance. Any comments?

Any experience with interference from the keel - mine is the “long
keel” version.

The depth thru hull on my 33 is forward of
the head straight through the flat area in the center. No balsa and a pretty
good location.

My F36 has its transducer mounted through the hull under the V berth. It
has worked well and never seems to come out of the water when pounding, at
least not enough to set off the alarm. On my previous boat, a Tartan 30, I
mounted in a similar location but simply attached it to the inside of the
hull (no core on that boat) by putting down a lump of MarineTex and pushing
the unit into the MarineTex. It also worked well but did give a few false
alarms when pounding. In any event make sure you properly seal the core so
that no water can get in.

Just to close this off, I did fit the base model Navman finder with
the in-hull transducer while the boat was afloat. I (carefuly) cut
away the inner glass and balsa and embedded the transducer in a
resin pool against the outer glass. The only problem was that on
firing up the finder, it got stuck in a software warp in the
simulation which took some good luck to escape from.

It works very well, installed amidships under the port saloon seat.
Flawless reception to 120 metres, usually good to 180, but not good
at less than 2. I would do it again.
