I want to fit a jib halyard arrangement to my F21 so that I can use a
small furling jib when going upwind and furl this for the downwind leg
to allow me to hoist the spinnaker. I have found that the small jib
fitted to the UK Squib Class keelboat is almost identical to the jib
specified in the F21 rules and second hand Squib jibs are easy to find
over here in the UK. I have sailed for a season with this jib fitted
with the standard Harken jib furl gear and have had to switch the
spinnaker halyard between the jib & the spinnaker. This switch takes
time and to speed up whilst racing I now want have a permanent means of
carrying the jib so that when turning the racing mark I can furl the jib
& hoist the spinnaker as quickly as possible - yes I have been “bitten”
by the club racing bug.
Has anyone fitted a seperate extenal pulley to the mast for the jib
halyard or fitted another sheaved pulley to the mast to carry the jib
hakyard internally? If so what arrangement has been used & what extra
blocks or double blocks have been used at the foot of the mast to carry
the jib halyard aft? Any guidance details, sketches or photos of your
arrangement would be very helpful & would be most appreciated?

Wilf-
How about just placing an inline block on the current halyard above
the furling swivel and use that block to run a separate spi halyard
through? Another option would be to make a small double
ended “pigtail” that would hank to the current halyard- one end would
have the jib furler swivel and the other would have a block for the
separate spi halyard. That way- NO extra “holes” etc. in the mast-
Just a thought-
Wilf - If I were to add a second halyard I would add it externally a few inches above the exist. sheave and fly the chute from there, dedicating the in-mast halyard to the jib. Perhaps you make up a bail that is attached to 2 or 3 stainless steel bands around the mast. I would prefer that to any more cutting into the CF (wait - you have an aluminum mast, right?). Hang a good swivel block off the bail and a block down at the deck running back to a Spinlock.
Let us know what you come up with and good luck with the racing!
