Five coats of "Interprotect" (Barrier coat) - wear a double respirator

Posted by Chris Ives (cives@…>)

Hello, All.

I brush painted 5 coats of “Interprotect” on my 1984 F21 shoal draft
when I bought her in 1999 from New Jersey. This after careful hand
scraping to remove years of blue crud, almost 1/4 thick in places -
followed by gentle 60 grit (60 as I recall, but please read the
Interprotect instructions) preparation with a good orbital hand sander
(equipped with a vacuum dust attachment). Note that the hull surface
after scraping was smooth and shiny - obviously she had never been
sanded prior to antifouling.

Then I applied the conventional Blue Anti-Fouling paint. I could have
made my life much easier and just used International’s VC-17 for our
freshwater environment. However I had dreams of trips to salt waters
like Nova Scotia, and was worried about (1) the sea water endurance of
fiberglass construction, and (2) the need for antifouling as opposed
to mere Teflon as in VC17.

So far I have no complaints (she has not been back to the sea yet) and
in our river conditions the blue antifouling does not need recoating
every year. A brushing (an old curling brush with a nice long handle)
plus a pressure clean is sometimes all that is necessary.

If you do use “Interprotect” please wear a double respirator (and a
Tyvek suit plus gloves) as the solvents used are pretty toxic - OK?

Subject: [freedom21] barrier coat

Hello every one.
Boat is in the yard for a winter (not for long I hope).
I am somewhat hesitant to take it out of the water due to the cost
factor and inability to sail while its there ( last year I went out on
X-mas and New Years day). With a baby to be born in about a month, I
doubt I will be taking the boat out of the water for the next two
seasons. Right now I am scraping all the paint of the bottom, there is
nothing on there but ablative paint. Plan is to fix all the
imperfections if I find any and… well, I thought of putting on a
barrier coat. That is a lot of extra headache and work so I need some
advice.
Do F-21 really need it ? Are we prone for blisters ? My boat set in
the water for 2 seasons straight with 3 coats of ablative and seems
fine. We have no core in the haul thus blisters will not be doing much
damage even if they happen ? Need some expertise here…
Brgds.
