Fixing up Freedom 21

Posted by George McKay & Gwen DeBaere (mmadonna@…>)

Hello All,
I am new to the boards. I bought a 21 a few months ago and have
started work on her. The first order of business was to make my old
Moore 24 trailer fit, so a cut off wheel, a tape measure and a drill
brought the trailer down to size. Now for the bottom work. I intend
to race her seriously on SF bay, so I am prepping her for new bottom
paint. She had a really badly dinged keel with the trailing edge
bent off to starboard. I bent it back and have faired it smooth, now
I need to fill the low spots. Unfortunately, when I sanded down the
previous owner’s paint/epoxy job, I found some hairline cracks that
were leaking right at the keel/keelstub interface. I drained the
little bit of water in the bilge and the leaking stopped. I put a
little water in and leaking started again. I assume that one or more
of the keelbolts are leaking. My former boat had this problem, and I
had it fixed by the manufacturer. I believe they ground out the wet
glass, and then epoxied down the keelbolts. Does anyone on the
boards have any advice or has anyone experienced this problem? I am
looking forward to getting the bottom done, ASAP because I have
ordered new sails from Haarstick. They should be here in a week or 2
and I would love to go for a sail. I would like to try to fix this
myself as I have already spent a fair amount of cash on the boat and
sails, and I have good epoxying skills. Once this problem is fixed I
have a good barrier coat and some VC 17 extra bottom paint that will
make her bottom smooth as glass. Thank you in advance for any
advice, George McKay, Highland Fling

Welcome to the F21 George
You should have a great time with this little hull in SF.
Fair the trailing edge of your keel to a flat square edge between 1/8" and 1/4"
wide, the leading edge should be a symmetrical bull rounded edge. This is what
I’ve been told by many J/24 guys as the best for racing performance.
Before you point the finger at the keel bolts make sure you don’t just have a
crack in the lower section (below the bolts) of the bilge. If it is leaking at
the bolts your probably going to have to clean out the spongy stuff and
re-glass.
Let us know how you like your Haarsticks.
Chuck

Thank you for the responses. I guess the best thing to start with is to clean up the cracks and see how much delamination there is. If it is not too bad, I will try rebedding the keel bolts and see if the leaking continues. If I do not achieve happiness, I’ll drop the keel and clean the whole thing up. It may be a while before I get a chance to try out the sails. Anyway, I’ll keep you informed and send some pictures. georgeOn Aug 30, 2006, at 8:41 AM, Charlie Arasim wrote:Welcome to the F21 GeorgeYou should have a great time with this little hull in SF.Fair the trailing edge of your keel to a flat square edge between 1/8" and 1/4" wide, the leading edge should be a symmetrical bull rounded edge.
