Flaking Clear Coat could be Vertglas (Tech)

Posted by katorpus (katorpus@…>)

The flaking clear coat issue could be from a product
called “Vertglas”. I’ve seen some mention somewhere (Practical
Sailor, maybe?) of that becoming a problem. This is one of a number
of acrylic based topcoats. Something akin to putting “Mop N Glo” or
floor wax on tile.

I have NO idea how to remove this. Maybe an acrylic-wax stripper
(for floors) would help. I’ve had good luck removing paint from
gelcoat with Easy Off oven cleaner, but I don’t know what it would
do to the Awlgrip. As always, test an inconspicuous spot first
(where do you find one of those on a boat hull?).

If you’re gonna try to remove something, I’ve found that it’s best
to START with the LEAST deteriorated area first (in testing). If it
works there, the REALLY flaky stuff will be “easy”.
