Has anyone on the list had any experience with Foley Engines? They offer a
rebuilt Perkins 4-108.

I know nothing about them, and would like to hear any feedback from someone who
has dealt with them.

When I was having issues with my 4-108, I ordered parts from Foley.
They were ok, although “Dr. Diesel” can seem a bit abrasive on the
phone. I ordered a rebuilt starter from them for my 4-108, and forgot
to tell them that it was for the left side of the engine. When it
arrived, and it was the wrong orientation, we had a little
conversation that went something like:
Dr. Diesel: “There’s no such thing as a left-hand side starter.”
Me: “Funny, I just spent 2 HOURS removing one. care to see it?”
Dr. Diesel: “Oh. What I meant to say is that there’s no such thing as
a rebuilt left-hand starter, so since you’re such a wise-a**, I’ll
have to charge you for a brand new one.”

Had I not been under a little bit of a deadline, I might have found a
place to rebuild the starter I had. One caution I would have - make
sure he enumerates exactly what you’re paying for. I ended up
bringing my old starter out there (Worcester, MA) and met Doc Diesel
face to face, and it somewhat changed my opinion about the experience
to the positive side.

One thing I’ll say, though, is that if they have a used 4-108, it’s
probably very good quality. I didn’t get the impression that they
skimp on anything.

Tom, if this is the Foley Engine out of
the Worcester, MA area they have a very reputable reputation.
