Free nautical charts

Posted by Max Lent (maxlent@…>)

Hi All,

I just discovered some resources that you may find useful. Being
intrigued by GPS and marine navigation, I thought that there ought
to be a way that I could cheaply download charts to my computer and
use those charts with my Bluetooth GPS receiver and my laptop
computer.

The first free resource that I found was SeaClear II
http://www.sping.com/seaclear/. This seemed like the perfect
solution until I started reading the manual. The user interface is
far from intuitive and the help files aren’t very helpful. Next, I
found an online tutorial on how to use SeaClear II at
http://www.boatmaine.us/seaclear-training.aspx. The tutorial is
excellent. Within minutes I had installed SeaClear II, downloaded
the free charts from NOAA, and used my Bluetooth GPS receiver to
locate my position.

SeaClear II works great even if you don’t have a GPS receiver. The
GPS receiver I bought, a Holux GPSlim (GR-236) SiRFStarIII Bluetooth
Receiver, was listed on eBay. A review can be found at
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/gr236.php.

My total cost for adding electronic nautical chart GPS to my
notebook computer was about $100.

I’ve also been using a GPS/notebook combination for digital charts. I
have mounted mine upside down in the cabin, just inside the companion
way. Then I used Software called PivotPro to invert the image on the
computer screen. This allowed easy viewing from the cockpit while
allowing me to flip the computer screen up and out of the way when not
in use.

I also use this software to download satelite imagery…
USAPhotoMaps

…while not designed for specifically for nautical use, it does
provide a useful/interesting view of where you are. I download the
satelite images to my notebook at home before going anywhere I haven’t
been before.

Regards,
Jake

Hi - I have been using The Cap’n and Tiki Navigator on an old Sony laptop with
2001
Bluecharts for my region and data from a Garmin eTrex via a serial to USB
connector. It is a
less than stable platform…

I like having a chartplotter functionality without the big $$ price tags of some
of the
systems commonly available.

I know NOAA now makes their charts (ENC) available online, but don’t know what
(free??)
software can use them. Any suggestions?
