I am looking at freedom 45’s. On one I noticed a smalled drilled hole
about 1/8" in diameter. Nothing was in it and from it there were small
cracks about 1/4 " up and another about 1/4" down. As well there
appeared to be some cosmetic work done near the ladders as the whole
mast was “chalking out” as you rubbed your hand over it. As well the
appears to be some type of horizontal “crack” or surface crack near
the stainless vang and block collar.
Is there a way of determining if this is a serious flaw or whether it
is cosmetic? Does anybody know of a recognized expert in these
matters? I would not proceed with a purchase until I saw some specific
answers.
Thanks, in advance, for the help. Bruce

I purchased a 1982 F-33 a few years ago. I know the F-45 masts are a later design. Anyway I have spoken with Eric Sponberg (a freestanding mast designer who also was at Freedom in the the early 80s). You can find him at www.sponbergyachtdesign.com. I also spoke with Composite Engineering, Concord, MA, (978) 371-3132, Ted Van Dusen, ext. 27 who is an expert in carbon fiber desings.

Hi I have F 45 cc # 30, Jade Moon. Our boat had the mast replaced by
the previous owner when he come out on the losing side of an argument
with a bridge. The new mast was done by TPI in Rhode Island in 1998,
they did the original masts for Freedom. I would direct questions to
them, or Paul Dennis at Warren River Boat works in Rhode Island, as I
am sure you have heard, he is the freedom expert.
What hull number are you looking at? Make sure you know that when you
talk to people, as the design evolved over time.
