Freedom 21 mast removal

Posted by sierrasmith71 (sierrasmith71@…>)

I thought that I would let folks know what else I discovered when I
took down the mast of my F21 last weekend.

I found that the clevis pin on the boom gooseneck was almost worn half
way through! It was also bent; well on its way to failing. The wear was
located at the mast hinge plates location, indicating that the pin was
rotating with the boom mount rather than the boom mount moving around
the pin. This was a disaster wating to happen.

I purchased a new clevis pin and lubricated it well(with SailKote) so
this would not happen again. I imagine that this was the first time
that the boom had been removed in the 24 years this boat has been
around (hull # 234, 1984).

This is something that should be inspected! It is simple to do and
should only take a few moments to give some piece of mind!
