Freedom 21 Totaled by IKE

Posted by Steve (kair-chuan.lim@…>)

Hi everyone,

Due to Hurricane IKE, my F21 Ying-Yang (photos in album) was
totaled. I have removed all the necessary equipment prior to the
storm, sails, jibs, stay sails, spinnaker sail, boom, cushions and
anything that I thought would float off or get damaged. These are
all in very good condition.

60% of marina where I moored my F21 was destroyed. The only way to
get to my F21 was by a dinghy.

However, my precious F21 is no more, I would like to sell what I have
to the group if anyone is in need of spare parts, shackles, sails,
lines, or . I am compiling a list and if you need anything for your
Freedom, please e-mail me.

I have since removed all my lines, and anything is is worth salvaging
or be used by other F21 enthusists.

Thanks.

Steve

Really sorry to hear about your Freedom 21. The remnants of Ike came
through Montreal early the Monday morning after your hit bringing
very high winds. Two boats broke loose, one from the dock and one
from a mooring. One had minor damage the other a bit more. My
recently bought (early August) Freedpm 21 (#26) was dragged on it’s
mooring about 150 feet down wind from where it was originally.
Thankfully it sustained no damage.

Not wanting to take advantage of a situation, I would be interested
in a few things from your boat. I need a new Staysail/Jib and new
halyards for the Mainsail and Staysail/Spinnaker. All my other sails
seem to be in good shape. There may be other things but this is the
wish list for now.

Steve,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss!

Were you insured? While it won’t be Yin-Yang…
I know of a fin keel F21 for sale on Lake Guntersville here in North
Alabama. She is an early boat (Hull #100 something) with the smoked
plexiglass fixed lights instead of ports and a marine head instead of
the portapoty. The boat is in need of some TLC and has a trailer.
If you are interested in a sucsesor to Yin-Yang let me know and I
will get you the phone number of the broker. If I remember correctly
the owner is asking $2000.

Respectfully,
Clark Myers

Bummer!! So sorry for your loss! When hurricane Bob came thru New
England in 1991, my Daiquiri was damaged: mostly cosmetic… requiring
Awlgriping the hull, and some dings repaired on the cabin top. This
was before I bought her (my prior boat was totalled!)… and the
entire spinaker gear was gone! Would you put a price on the swivel
fitting and the spar?

Julius,

Thanks for all you past assistance in showing me how to get Ying-
Yang on the water. My wife and I had a great time sailing her unitl
IKE this past week.

Yes… everything else survived and we are blessed to have power 2
hours after the storm. The last of the residents in Houston got
their power yesterday.

Steve, I hope you don’t take this as insensitive, because I am
sincerely sorry that your boat was wrecked, but I am interested in
knowing what happened. Was Ying-Yang swept ashore in the storm? Was
she banged up against other boates or stuff? Knowing what you know
now, is there anything you would recommend a person do in a similar
circumstance to protect a boat from catastrophic damage?

Everyone,

Hurricane force winds and surges are no joking matters and are VERY
DAMAGING. No matter how well you tie down your boat, you will never
know what it goes through unless you are there, and you are insane if
you are on your boat, during a hurricane.

At my marina, there were 50’ & 60’ pushed ashore in between buildings
with gaping holes in the hull and at some other piers and others
remained intact.

From the debris line, the water in the marina rose about 12 feet.
All walkways and finger piers were destroyed. Several boats on my
slip broke loose and ended elsewhere, my neighboring boat sunk in my
slip, and my boat was pushed 2 slips down. I had placed new 3/8"
dock lines, 4 at the bow and 6 astern, all but 3 remained at the
stern. The boat floats but the top deck was torn open at the
gunwales.

Here are my lessons learned from IKE.

  1. Move to protected slips if possible.
  2. Use thicker dock lines and spring lines. Allow slack for water
    rise. Surge plus tides.
  3. Remove everything, sails, cover, booms, outboards, etc
  4. Tie halyards and any open lines down tight.
  5. Help your neighbors to secure their boats, from hitting yours.

I hope this helps.
