Help1 I bought a 1984 Freedom 21 - keel version - and need some assistance
in sorting out the rigging. The boat will be moored at Hillers Cove in
Mattapoisett, Massachusetts.
Is there a 21 in Southeastern Massachusetts or Rhode Island that I could
look at before I make any fatal errors?
Many thanks in advance.

Arthur,
Check out this website http://www.dwyergreen.com/PDF/f21commission.pdf It explains the whole rigging/commissioning setup for the F 21…be glad to answer any questions…
With all the folks coming on-line, I’m starting to think all the F21’s are still being sailed…great news…what hull # do you have?
Hope this helps…

Hi
I’ve got a Freedom 21 and had real problems with a leaky mast - I posted for help a while ago. The collar around the mast sounds similar except mine had copious amounts of tape wrapped around it too. I took the tape off, plus all the bits of rotten sponge and used a rubber inner tube to form a new collar. Hope it works. I haven’t dared unstep the mast yet but may have to resort to that if the repair fails to stop the leak. (The new problem is now to repair all the water damage in the cabin)
Good luck

I acquired a 1984 Freedom 21 (keel version) in 2003, but circumstances
prevented my getting it into the water last year.
I am hoping for a different outcome this spring.
The boat came poorly equipped, and I am particularly concerned about the
collar around the mast. The one I found aboard the boat is a kind of sponge
rubber, partially eaten away, and I am not sure what else is used to hold
the mast in place.
Is there anyone who can tell me where I might acquire a new collar?
Is there anyone in Southeastern Massachusetts or Rhode Island whose 21 I
might see to understand what a well-rigged boat looks like?
My base is Hiller Cove in Mattapoisett.
Many thanks.

Art,
I can send you pictures of my F-21. I took enough pix last year to be able to
put the thing back together this year.

Arthur,
We are also getting ready to launch our boat for the first time. We
have a Freedom 24 with a keel stepped mast. I wrote to Freedom to ask
what we needed to support our mast and they told me to use Spartite to
create a new mast wedge. Spartite is a pour-in-place urethane. They
have a nice website www.spartite.com and also technical information at
248-616-2411. Goodluck. Kevin Schmitz

You just need a new mast collar. They sell them. Ask a guy named Paul Hemker.
His e-mail address is phemker@…

Spartite is the right stuff, but be sure that the mast and mast collar are very very well preped, if not they will stick and at next mast removal you lift the boat before it breaks free. I have senn a 25,000 lb Morgalina come out of the water in this fashion. It had benn preped correctly according to the engineer owner.

Many thanks. Spartite seems to be the solution - along with lots of
vaseline.
Arthur
Posted by Alan Kusinitz (akusinitz@…>)
One probelm can be that you put the vaseline on but when you slide the mast
through the collar it scrapes some vaseline off (depending on whether you’re
letting it adhere to the collar or the mast. Prudent to swap some vaseline on
after in place or cover with plastic when sliding in then remove the plastic or
some other similar solution.
I’m spartiting tomorrow.
Wish me luck.
