Freedom 25 Carbon Wing Mast removal

Posted by pablo_sail (pablo_sail@…>)

I have a Freedom 25 1982 with a Carbon Wing Mast and wish to remove
it for inspection and lubrication. I see some nuts and bold down
below and it seems that removing those would permits mast removal.
Before making a mess of an otherwise simple task, I decided to ask if
someone would know exactly how these masts should be removed.

Do you have any info?

Thanks for your help.

Jacques, from Montreal Canada.

Jacques,
I had a F-25 #12 wing mast for about 2 years and dry sailed her here
in New Meixco…I pulled the mast many times…all you do is
take out the bolts from around the step at the deck and lift it out.
You need to take care and make sure you have all your wiring, for
lights and radio antenna disconnected and free as the mast comes
out. Going back in you need to make sure the bearing race at the
step (seperate piece of plastic material, you apply grease to) does
not get in a bind and broken and that the base re-sets correctly in
the keel bearing . This was about 10yrs ago but I’m pretty sure
that’s all there is to it.
Take a look at my new Freedom pictures (some of the last pics in the
photo section ) of SaraJ sailing at Elepant Butte Lake in New
Mexico…I love this little boat…very fast…

Good Luck

Charlie,

Good advice but I am curious as my F25 has no bolts or anything else but the
haylards holding down the mast. When lowering I stay below to pull through the
wires until the mast is a inch or less above the male flange. Then I go on deck
to wiggle the mast as the crane drops 2 inches. I try not to have the mast come
crashing down of the step.

Do you, Jacque, or anyone else have tips on trimming the wing mass for optimal
performance? The only thing I have found particularly useful is pulling it in
tight in heavy winds to depower the main, a technique use on dinghy catamarans.

I’m particularly interested in your down sizing to a F21 from a F21. As the kids
have left home and no longer available for race crew it sounds very tempting,
though the F25 would be more comfortable for crusing if I had the time.

Larry,
I guess that’s right, it’s been a while since I had my F25 (no bolts like the fixed F21 mast).
The reason behind my downsizing was 2 fold…I sold the F25 to a friend who could not get his family (wife and son) to sail with him…we hoped with a boat he could single hand they would get into it (they never did so it’s up for sale now). I bought a one-owner Albin Express 25 from a friend in Milwaukee (trailered it all the way back to New Mexico in January).
3 years later I went back to school (short on $$$$) and then got married. So I sold the Albin and we bought the wife a new car…saved enough $$$$ over the last 3 years and we bought the F21.
The wife has yet to sail with me due to her having balance problems…but this past weekend I forced the issue and some friends took her out on their Catalina 25. She had a great time… Come to find out she seems to be fine once she is on the boat. Standing on the dock and watching the water moving makes her dizzy…but on the boat moving with the water is OK…go figure.
I’m now trying to talk her into going into debt to get an F28…we have to travel out of town to sail and when she comes along (to just hang out while I go racing) we have to rent a hotel room (no shower and such on this little boat)…$$$$ down the drain.
I really would like to make sailing a thing that we can do together, so I think a F28 would be perfect (just about as much boat as I would want to trailer)…only thing is I don’t know if it has enough standing headroom down below…I’m just shy of 5’10" and she is about 5’8". The ultimate goal is to retire in the next 10yrs and live/travel on a boat til-the-end-of-my-days.

Doug,
Thanks…for the F 28 info. If and when I can get a chance to sail one I’m sure I’ll have more questions
Do you have yours in Arizona? Took my 21 down there and sailed her in the AZYC Birthday Regatta…lots of fun with 78 boats on the water…
I totally forgot to call you about the RGSC mass (16 ) exodus of boats being trailered out to California for a week in Catalina. From My understanding they have everything under control. My participation is up in the air right now, as I had knee surgery about 3&1/2 weeks ago…I’m still planning on crewing for a couple out of Santa Fe that have a F 32 at Marina Del Ray, as long as my knee heals in time…

Charlie, I have a mull F28, I am six foot
and have good headroom, it is not an issue. Would be glad to answer questions
about F28’s, My wife and I love ours. We have spent 16 nights aboard since
Thanksgiving. It is a great boat!

Yes, mine is in Arizona on Lake Pleasant. There are some pictures
on the Yahoo site. I may have sailed your Santa Fe couples boat. Do they
offer her for Charter via SeaMist Skippers in Marina Del Ray? If so we chartered
her for a week and sailed to Catalina Island last year, we are making the trip on her again mid July. I think
the name of the vessel is Free and Clear. Is that the same boat?

Doug,
Yep, that’s the vessel, I bought my F 25 (Free and Clear Too) from them and they got the F 32 (Free and Clear). They sailed Free and Clear in the Ensenada Race just a few weeks back.
Since then we both bought a F 21’s, mine of course is all I have, they use theirs for sailing here in New Mexico…don’t think they have had her out for sometime, as they sail Herron Lake up north near Chama, that lake has been so low for the last 2 years you can’t use the ramps.
I’m sorry I missed seeing your ship last January…I didn’t have access to the owners slips…I did sail around the docks and but I didn’t see her. I’ll take a look at the pictures.
I would love to come over and check your vessel out??
Like I was saying we have 2 choices…either get a larger vessel so my wife would be comfortable aboard or we get a motorhome…after looking at the expense I would rather put the $$$$ in a bigger vessel. I think it would still be cheaper to get a F 28 even if I had to buy a new trailer and tow her across the country. I have a powerful enough truck now, to handle the weight. Currently it looks like the nearest F 28 up for sale is in Seattle.
Do you know if the beam of a F 28 is within the limits for going down the road, or do you have to have permits and wide load signs? I have friends here with a Ranger 32 and they have to go through all that extra hassle to tow her anywhere…

I have owned hull number 19 since 1982 (purchased new) and have
removed and replaced the mast yearly for winter storage. There is
nothing holding the mast into the boat except the halyards and it’s
own weight. Once the halyards are removed and the mast wiring
disconnected at the base, the mast can be lifted out. Some caviats
however: do not remove or try to replace the mast in anything but a
very calm day. Any wind on the mast can cause the mast to cant during
the installation and damage the receiving tube or even the deck.
When in doubt wait for another time.

Here’s some other tips:

  1. Find the balance point of the mast and mark with a piece of
electrical tape. You will want to lift from slightly above this
point. I wrap the mast with padding to avoid any damage to the mast
or track and then form and secure a loop around the mast over the
padding and slightly above the balance point using a strong line
(make the loop large enough to go around the lower part of the mast
or you may not be able to pull the loop down once the mast is up).
The other end of the line is securely attached to the lower part of
the mast. When lifted, the weight of the mast is supported by this
line and the connection to the lower part of the mast. The line from
the “gin pole” hoist is then attached to the loop slightly above the
balance point. The mast is lifted and put in a vertical position
(base down obviously). The mast is lowered through the deck to about
12 inches off the mast step. The mast wires are then fed though the
hole in the center of the base and the mast slowly lowered the rest
of the way until it correctly mates with the base. It’s actually
quite easy if the mast is aligned correctly above the whole in the
deck and there is no wind. Coming out is easier still.

Very interesting. Tell your friends we
love their boat Free and Clear and will actually charter her twice this summer.
Would be delighted to show you our “Free at Sea” F28, and take you
and your wife for a sail. Just let me know what weekend you would like to
visit. The F-28 weighed 8000 pounds on the crane in Marina del Ray when we
pulled her, full of water, fuel and gear. We have a 10,000 pound capacity
trailer. The beam is 10-4”, so you are not legal without permits. Lots of
us trailer to California without permits and take the risk of a fine. We often travel at
night to avoid the desert heat on the rig in the summer months. Many of us are
over the legal beam. I think my brother got his Capri 26 from Lake Herron. Lots of boats for sale
up there at some good prices due to the water situation.
