Freedom 25 info

Posted by sixate7 (sixate7@…>)

I am a former powerboat owner ready to make the jump to the dark side

I am looking at a 1982 freedom 25. I have not been able to find a
whole lot of info on these boats. I have read the sales brochure
touting the ease of solo sailing. This is what attracted me to the
boat. I will primarily sail solo or with my kids (9 and 10).

Are they primarily single sail only using the spinnaker downwind? I
will be sailing the Chesapeake bay. Any info is a help.

If you get an '82 with wing mast, it’s my opinion that the skinny
little blade jib adds little to the speed of the boat. The spinnaker
can add quite a bit of speed off the wind in light to medium airs.
The spinnaker pole can be moved some from behind the mainsail on
downwind runs, which optimizes things. This boat can be very fast for
its size in heavy airs. A favorite trick of mine in heavy airs is to
go upwind reefed, and shake out the reef at the turning mark and go
off-wind with all up (like gangbusters). Very important to learning
how to sail this boat is to have telltales on the mainsail luff AND
the leech. Use the traveler and the main. If possible get the
original writeups from Tillotsen-Pearson/Freedom. Yes, it’s easy to
solo sail, one can manage all the lines at the cockpit simply by
steering with the tiller between your knees.
The cockpit is very nice with good, high back support. My
only beef was that the boat doesn’t have an anchor locker, but all
other storage is superb for a small boat (It’s better than my Freedom
28). I ended storing all the line in the forepeak using a plastic
trash can affixed to the overhead and a deck pipe to feed the line
down to the trash can. With this arrangement you still have room for
a short clothes pole in the forepeak.
To replace the mast boot (original, long gone after 26
years) use a 6" Fernco fitting meant to attach clay pipe to plastic
pipe (see your plumbing supply, or Lowes).

thanks for the info everyone.

The one I have been looking at has lowered the price to 5500.

sound good? Just don’t know what these are going for

Posted by Charlie L. (clivaday@…>)

The price is very good if the sails are in good condition; motor runs
well; cabin is in ok condition; no leaks from cabin/deck into
interior; no soft spots on cabin top/decking; rotating mast has
bearings, etc. in good condition; the spinnaker, and spinnaker
hardware, pole, launching tube, etc are intact; winches, running
rigging, etc are ok; bottom is in good condition (rash of small
blisters can be expected); mast, boom, spin pole, and hardware, are
in good condition. Trailer included? If so, it’s an excellent buy,
even if other elements are not that good. Feel free to call me. 251-
